The human body is indeed an interesting “machine” if we may call it so. Here is a list of 10 fascinating facts about your body that you may not have read about before. Read on to find out…
1.An average person produces about 25,000 quarts of saliva in a lifetime, enough to fill two swimming pools.
2. We all have tiny mites living in our eyelashes. Your face is host to bugs too tiny to see. These eight-legged mites mate, lay eggs, hatch, and repeat — all on your face.
3. Sweat itself is odorless. It’s the bacteria on the skin that mingles with it and produces body odor. When you get too hot or you lose your cool, your nerves send signals to open millions of glands, allowing sweat to flow. It pools by your armpits, palms, feet, head, and private parts. Germs love to swim, so they jump right in.
4. Similar to fingerprints, everyone also has a unique Tongue Print. Being the most hardworking muscle in human body, it twists to form the sounds you speak and pushes around the food you eat. While you sleep, your tongue moves saliva down your throat.
5. Your bones are composed of 31% water. Human Bones are ounce for ounce, stronger than steel. A human baby has over 60 more bones than an adult.
6. You are the first contributor of the dust underneath your bed – it is actually your own dead skin! About 70% of the dust in your home is human skin cells. You slough off roughly 1.5 pounds of dead skin a year.
7. Even stripped to the bone, women and men are different animals. A male skeleton has a square chin, large brow ridge, and sloping forehead. The female one has a more pointed chin, smaller brow, and a less angled forehead. And yes, she also has wider, child-bearing hips.
8. The average human retina has five million cone receptors on it and 100 million rods that detect monochrome contrast. The cone receptors are responsible for color vision. The human eye has about 576 megapixels. Women have more cones than men do, and therefore see colors brighter than their male counterparts. However, due to this, men can see better at night.
9. You have better scent memory than you think. Your brain can remember 50,000+ different scents.
10. Every person is a host to 2-5 pounds of live bacteria. Not all bacteria are bad, of course. For instance, a type of bacteria found in yogurt (lactobacilli) is proven to be useful for easing diarrhea caused by antibiotics. In fact, the largest population of bacteria in our bodies is found in the intestines.
