Orthotists, sometimes referred to as prosthetists are tertiary allied health professionals. They assess and treat the physical as well as functional limitations of patients. These limitations can be a result of disabilities or illnesses, including limb amputations. Orthotists are trained to prescribe, design, fit and monitor orthoses and prostheses. They also provide therapy and educate the patient regarding the use and care of an appropriate orthosis/prosthesis.

Orthotists treat a wide variety of clients - such as children born with congenital limb deficiency or cerebral palsy, people who have had an amputation following an accident. Some other examples include people with muscular weakness especially after a spinal injury or a stroke and even those with diabetic foot ulcers or elderly who have lost a limb as a result of vascular disease.
