Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs found in the ovaries. The ovaries produce eggs for fertilisation. During each ovulation in a menstrual cycle, a sac (follicle) expels an egg and degenerates. If the ovulation was faulty with unreleased eggs or undissolved sacs, ovarian cyst can occur.
The condition is commonly found among women of childbearing age. Usually, ovarian cysts do not cause any discomfort and resolves on its own. However, one in five women may suffer from symptoms that refuses to go away without treatment or surgery.
The signs and symptoms of ovarian cysts that requires medical attention include:
-
Persistant pelvic pain
Pain at the ovary may be experienced at the lower right or left side of the lower pelvis, which may be bothersome during exercise and sexual activities. There could also be a constant pain which lingers even after menstrual bleeding. Sometimes, an abnormal growth may also be felt.
-
Bloating
Abdominal pain and swelling may occur due to the growing mass in the stomach. In some cases, the cysts can grow into the size of a watermelon. Sadly, the swelling is often dismissed as weight gain. Nevertheless, if the weight is only centred in the stomach with no obvious reasons for weight gain, this could be indicative of ovarian cyst.
-
Feeling full or “stuffed up”
A feeling a heaviness can be felt in the abdomen due to pressure caused by the cyst. The feeling of fullness is somewhat like constipation, but it is only felt at the affected ovary. If the fullness is felt for two to three weeks despite normal bathroom habits, an investigation for ovarian cyst may be warranted.
-
Unexplained urinary problems
If the cyst presses against the bladder, this may create a frequent urge to urinate. Some women may also have difficulty urinating due to the blockage caused by the cyst. Regardless, any urinary issues would require a visit to the doctor.
