Bust Mammogram Myths & Gain the Upper Hand to Stop Breast Cancer

Breast cancer affects one in eight women in the United States. More than  60% of breast cancer cases can be detected early before they start to spread. In fact, mammogram is the gold standard to screen for breast cancer. Despite that, only three out of five American women aged 40 and over had a mammogram within the past 2 years. Perhaps, this has got to do with reservations and myths related to it.

Myth # 1: Mammogram is dangerous because of radiation.

Truth: Mammograms produce x-ray pictures with low doses of radiation.  The advancement in technology has resulted in more accurate pictures with even lower doses of radiation. Therefore radiation risk is very small. Furthermore, the benefit of early detection of breast cancer clearly far outweighs the risk of radiation exposure.

Myth # 2: Mammogram is inaccurate for breast cancer detection.

Truth: Although several factors, such as dense breast tissue and breast implants, can affect the chances of finding cancer with mammograms, it remains effective in 80 % of breast cancer screening. This risk can be mitigated with repeated and regular breast cancer screening, usually done once every year.

Myth # 3: Mammogram is only for women above age 40.

Truth: Breast screening recommendations for women at average risk of breast cancer differ from one organisation to another. For instance, the age to start having mammograms varies from age 40 to 50. Nevertheless, most organisations recognise the benefit of screening from age 40 onwards for early detection of breast abnormalities.

Unfortunately, some women may be at higher risk of developing breast cancer. These women ought to consult their doctor for specific screening recommendations. Starting screening from a younger age may be relevant for this group.

Myth # 4: Mammogram is not suitable for women with breast implants.

Truth: Breast implants made of saline or silicone can obscure mammogram images. In rare cases, having a mammogram can rupture a breast implant. Regardless, mammograms remain as the mainstay in breast cancer detection. The unique needs of women with breast implants can be addressed by engaging a facility that is experienced in screening women with breast implants. Besides that, communicating with your doctor or technician on your breast implants and other concerns prior to the session can be helpful and reassuring.

Myth # 5: Mammogram is not necessary if I can do breast self-examination or clinical breast exam.

Truth: Mammogram remains as the gold standard for breast cancer screening, as mammogram can detect breast cancers before any symptoms appear. Furthermore, physical examinations alone have not shown to have clear benefits in early stage cancer detection as it can be up to 3 years before it can be felt. Despite that, women should still be familiar with the look and feel of their breast and continue breast-self examination. Often, breast abnormalities felt during daily activities, such as showering or dressing, can alert someone to consult a doctor for a more thorough check-up. However that does not substitute for mammograms.

Myth # 6: Mammogram does not work for women with dense breast tissues.

Truth: Dense breast tissues can make it harder to see through to detect cancer cells, especially among women who are younger, leaner, or under hormonal therapy to manage menopausal symptoms. Regardless, mammogram is still the most effective screening tool. Interestingly, these women are also at higher risk of breast cancer, which further magnifies the importance of mammogram.

Conclusion

Mammogram is still the best screening tool to detect breast cancer for females above age 40,  regardless of medical history. Get yourself or your loved ones checked. Consult a doctor today to get a mammogram.
