We may all have had to undergo physiotherapy at some point in life. How does it work? What are the rules govering this form of therapy? When physiotherapy is required in case of a trauma or an illness, the body tries to get back on track by itself. But do we know the ABCs of this therapy? Read this article by Physionique to know more about this topic.
The goal of physiotherapy is ABC
- A – Optimal Alignment
- B – Balanced body movement (biomechanics)
- C – Centredness
ABCs are commonly affected by :
- Trauma – falls, car accidents that create mal-alignments and soft tissue restrictions
- Habitual postures – for example – slouching, or sitting and looking at a screen that is not centred, leaning on one elbow, carrying a heavy bag on the same shoulder
- Muscle imbalances from gym workouts or sports that use too much of some muscles and not others
A physiotherapist can help restore normal ABCs using
- manual therapy
- massage to release restrictions
- posture and movement training
- exercise therapy and stretching to correct muscle imbalances
- education
Normal ABCs will ensure the forces acting on the body are balanced and reduce wear and tear on the joints and soft tissues of the body
