Professional Statement
Dr Muruga Kumar Rajoo is a Consultant Neurosurgeon who has been with Sime Darby Healthcare for the past 12 years.

Graduating from University Science Malaysia in 1988, he then obtained his post graduate qualifications in the field of surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) at both Glasgow and Edinburgh in 1993. He commenced his sub-specialization training in the Department of Neurosurgery in General Hospital Kuala Lumpur and subsequently furthered his training abroad, namely at the Department of Neurosurgery, Atkinson Morley Hospital , London and Hurstwood Park Neurological Centre, before taking up a vascular research fellow assignment in 1997 at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London.

On his return to Malaysia, he continued to serve as a consultant neurosurgeon with the Ministry of Health at the Kuala Lumpur General Hospital where he focused on image guided surgery and complex skull base surgery. He played a pivotal role in, first, setting up the Radiosurgery facility for the Ministry of Health and following that, for Sime Darby Medical Centre and continues to be involved as a key opinion leader in the field of radiosurgery locally.

A consummate believer of continuous learning and self-development, Dr Kumar spent his early years in neurosurgery honing his skills in micro and neurovascular surgery before broadening his expertise in other areas such as radiosurgery, base of skull surgery and cervical spine surgery through the various workshops that he attends worldwide, annually. He is passionate about seeking new solutions to current surgical problems and as such, is a strong advocate of a multi-disciplinary approach to spinal surgery.

Coming from a neurosurgical background, he is inherently conscious of the need to ensure good outcomes whilst minimising surgical risk for patients. In his quest to assure maximum safety during spinal surgery, he applies the most recent developments in the field of neurosurgery, such as micro surgical techniques and neurophysiological monitoring to spinal surgery.

With safety being a priority, he has also introduced image guided spinal instrumentation and intraoperative ultrasound imaging during spinal surgery. This incorporation of real-time intraoperative imaging, as part of his repertoire during spinal tumour surgery has proven to enhance surgical outcomes
