Lifestyle tips on managing myopia | Expert Says

1) REDUCE PROLONGED USE OF DIGITAL DEVICES

Living in the digital age, it can be difficult to put away our devices. Unfortunately, digital devices can endanger our vision if not used with care. Looking at a screen for prolonged periods of time leads to eye-strain. According to Dr. Aaron Miller, a pediatric ophthalmologist, eye-strain elongates the eye-ball which worsens myopia. To avoid this, monitor and reduce your screen-time!

2) SPEND TIME OUTDOORS

Another key to preventing the progression of myopia is to relax your eyes from having to focus on nearby objects by spending time outside. Not only that, but sunlight exposure has been shown to reduce myopia based on research conducted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

3) WORK IN WELL-LIT AREAS

Make sure that the area you work in is properly lit. Poorly-lit areas force you to strain your eyes, which can elongate the eye-ball and worsen myopia!

4) TAKE BREAKS DURING SCREEN-TIME

Taking breaks while using digital devices allows the eyes to rest and readjust, since the rate of blinking is significantly lower when focused on a screen. Dr. Luxme Hariharan, from Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, encourages the use of the 20-20-20 model: Look at a distance 20 feet away for 20 seconds, in intervals of 20 minutes.

5) VISIT THE OPTOMETRIST REGULARLY

Ensure your eyes are healthy and prevent the onset of myopia by visiting the optometrist for regular eye checkups. If the optometrist notices anything amiss, they can advise you on next steps to take to protect your vision.
