Pregnancy is an important time in a woman’s life. It is also a time when the body undergoes several physical changes as the belly grows to accommodate the growing foetus. As a result, changes occur in the musculo-skeletal system. Along with that, the posture changes as centre of gravity gradually gets displaced.

It is during this time and after birth, where mothers can benefit from pregnancy physiotherapy.

What is pregnancy physiotherapy? How does it help and What are the benefits?

Pregnancy Physiotherapy covers therapy in antenatal care during pregnancy and postnatal care after giving birth. Therapy helps to prevent discomforts during this period and prepares you for a smoother delivery and a faster recovery.

During these 2 periods, women tend to experience certain problems such as back pain, urinary incontinence and weight management. Physiotherapy aims at addressing these issues. Additionally, benefits include strengthening the pelvic floor and core muscles, learning relaxation techniques and breathing exercises as well as keeping fit in general. All these preparations help reduce labour time and pain during the delivery.

For pain relief, physiotherapists employ the use of hydrotherapy, massage therapy, acupuncture to relieve low back pain.

When should pregnant women start physiotherapy?

Usually you can start with strengthening and other forms of exercises after the first trimester (3 months onwards). However, there is no restriction in seeking treatment for pain management.

What about high risk pregnancies?

For high risk pregnancies, your physician or physiotherapist will assess and advise on the best course of treatment pertaining to pregnancy physiotherapy.

When is physiotherapy contraindicated during pregnancy?

As a rule, do not undertake physiotherapy when the pregnancy is threatened. Including when there are signs of early contractions or when the gynaecologist advises against physiotherapy. The best person to advise will be the attending gynaecologist.

Are there guidelines for pregnant ladies before starting pregnancy physiotherapy?

There are generally no specific guidelines before starting physiotherapy. When in doubt, always approach your gynaecologist or physiotherapist for further information.
